2023 AFCON: Black Stars supporters receive Ghc4,800 each after threatening to return home
Some section of Ghanaian supporters in Ivory Coast to Black Stars who had previously threatened to return home due to unmet expectations have each received an amount of $400 as per diems.
Fans who were transported to cheer the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations were left stranded and threatened to return home due lack of coordination and support from the organizing bodies.
However, the fans have been sorted out following a meeting with officials. After rounds of discussions, all the disgruntled supporters were paid Ghc4,800 each to address their concerns.
“There is good news. Yesterday after the story broke, around midnight, infact most of us here went to sleep before the officials came and they came to call us and they gave us what we were due,” a journalist who is at the camp of the Black Stars told Citi News.
Asked if all the supporters received Ghc4,800, the journalist responded, “I am not aware but what I do know from some of the dwellers [from other hotels] is that they also received Ghc4,800 as those at the hotel [I am] received.
“For the entire tournament, in fact, officials were unable to tell us, so we don’t know if this [Ghc4,800] is going to be for the entire tournament.”
Meanwhile, the Black Stars having suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Cape Verde will take on Egypt in their second Group B game on Thursday night with kick-off scheduled at 20:00GMT.
